As the orange robes take over the stage this autumn, the University of Johannesburg is set to confer qualifications upon a staggering 13,125 graduates. While the season celebrates the next generation of professionals, UJ will also pay tribute to the architects of the nation’s past and present.
Honouring a National Icon
Leading the cohort of honorary degree recipients is Francois Pienaar, the legendary 1995 Rugby World Cup-winning captain. Pienaar’s leadership transcends the sporting field; his partnership with Nelson Mandela became a global symbol of reconciliation and a defining moment for South African unity.
By awarding him an honorary doctorate, UJ recognizes Pienaar’s enduring contribution to nation-building and his role as a “global leader” who inspired a fractured country to dream as one.
13,125 Success Stories
Beyond the honorary accolades, the 2026 season marks a massive logistical and academic achievement for the institution. Over 13,000 students will transition into alumni, joining a global network of UJ graduates across various faculties.
