In a major win for South African scholarship and the arts, Natalia Molebatsi, a distinguished researcher and lecturer at the University of South Africa (Unisa), has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Fellowship at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA.
The award is the highest honor Northwestern can bestow upon a doctoral candidate, reserved exclusively for those demonstrating “exceptional promise and impact” in their fields. For Molebatsi, currently pursuing her PhD in the United States, the fellowship recognizes over two decades of trailblazing work in Pan-African feminism, performance, and cultural communication.
Bridging the Ancestral and the Academic
At the induction ceremony held in late 2025, Molebatsi delivered a moving keynote address that captured the essence of her research. She described poetry not merely as a literary form, but as a “powerful tool for communication and a means of ancestral invocation.”
Molebatsi’s Research Pillars:
- Black/Pan-African Feminist Poetics: Exploring how poetry serves as a vessel for feminist liberation and identity.
- Cultural Communication: Analyzing the intersection of performance and social discourse.
- Talent Management at Unisa: As a lecturer in the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies (DGSS), she is part of the Academic Career Building Programme (ACBP), aimed at fostering the next generation of top-tier South African academics.

A Legacy of Voice and Vision
With a career spanning more than 20 years, Molebatsi has moved seamlessly between the lecture hall and the stage. Her publication record includes award-winning poetry collections and critical essays that have challenged traditional academic boundaries.
The Presidential Fellowship provides her with a global platform to further her research into gender and sexuality studies while engaging with international scholars dedicated to social justice and creative innovation.
