South African actress Ama Qamata stars in 'Fight Like a Girl,' a powerful new film about a Congolese woman's journey through boxing

In a powerful convergence of cinema and activism, South African star and producer Ama Qamata recently commanded the spotlight in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for the premiere of the African drama Fight Like a Girl.

The premiere, held over the weekend of March 7 and 8 in Kinshasa, was timed to coincide with International Women’s Day. The event served as a high-profile platform to combat gender-based violence, receiving significant backing from the DRC’s First Lady and senior government officials.

A Story of Survival and the “Sweet Science”

The film, directed by Matthew Leutwyler, is a gripping narrative of transformation. Qamata delivers a raw, evocative performance as a young Congolese woman who escapes the horrors of forced labor in an illegal mineral mine.

The Plot at a Glance:

  • The Escape: A journey from the trauma of illegal mining to the hope of a new beginning.
  • The Sanctuary: An all-women’s boxing club in Goma becomes a site of healing.
  • The Mentor: Veteran actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim portrays a determined coach who helps the protagonist reclaim her dignity through sport.

Authenticity in Every Punch

Fight Like a Girl isn’t just a fictional drama; it is deeply rooted in reality. The filmmakers spent over five years documenting a real-life women’s boxing club in the region. To maintain authenticity, members of that actual club appear alongside the professional cast.

“Filming in Congo was one of the most powerful experiences of my career,” Qamata shared. “This story is about resilience, courage, and the strength of women who refuse to be defined by their circumstances.”
