Relebohile Mofokeng's mother Naomi has issued an apology to Kaizer Chiefs fans after the new Union SG winger made a playful swipe during his Orlando Pirates farewell.

A bit of classic Soweto derby banter has required a mother’s gentle touch. Naomi Mofokeng, mother of newly-minted Union Saint-Gilloise forward Relebohile Mofokeng, has stepped forward to clear the air and offer a heartfelt “askies” (apology) to the Kaizer Chiefs faithful following her son’s playful parting words.

The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana dynamic winger recently locked in a massive career milestone, sealing a four-year contract with Belgian Pro League outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to finish an illustrious multi-year development cycle with the Buccaneers.

The Farewell Joke That Stirred the Pot

During an emotional farewell dinner held by Orlando Pirates, the highly praised youngster couldn’t resist throwing a light-hearted jab at their cross-town rivals.

“I am going to keep it short,” Mofokeng grinned during his farewell speech. “I will only say that I will make all of you proud. I will do everything I can, just like I did at Pirates… And… yeah, I think Kaizer Chiefs can breathe now that I am no longer there.”

While the room burst into laughter, the comment quickly set social media ablaze. Certain sections of Amakhosi supporters took the banter to heart, while others laughed it off as traditional rival fun.

“Askies, Makhosi”: A Mother’s Peace Offering

Recognizing the storm brewing on social media, Naomi Mofokeng swiftly stepped in to reinforce that her son holds nothing but respect for the broader South African football fraternity.

“He was joking, and he was even laughing,” she explained warmly. “You all know Relebohile is humble and respects people. Askies, Makhosi. Love you so much.”

Mofokeng bids farewell to domestic football having anchored himself as a top-tier prospect, registering 11 goals and 8 assists across his time wearing the famous skull and crossbones. He will report to Belgium in the coming weeks to spearhead his pre-season preparations in Europe.
