Patrick Maswanganyi could be heading for the Orlando Pirates exit door, with reports suggesting the attacking midfielder is closing in on a move to Bahrain.
The 28-year-old was a surprise omission from the Pirates squad for Saturday’s 1-0 MTN8 semi-final first-leg victory over Sekhukhune United, despite being available for selection.
His absence immediately raised eyebrows, particularly after coach Abdeslam Ouaddou confirmed that the player was not injured but declined to elaborate on the situation.
Maswanganyi’s surprise omission sparks transfer talk
Asked about Maswanganyi after the match, Ouaddou offered little clarity, saying he could not reveal much about the matter.
Those comments have taken on greater significance following a report by SABC Sport journalist Mazola Molefe, who claims that Maswanganyi is edging closer to a move to Bahrain.
According to the report, Orlando Pirates have reportedly advanced negotiations with an unnamed club affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
While the identity of the prospective club has not been disclosed, the negotiations are understood to be at an advanced stage.
End of the road at Orlando Pirates?
A move to Bahrain would bring an end to Maswanganyi’s reported three-year spell with the Buccaneers.
The attacking midfielder has been an important contributor during his time at Pirates, featuring prominently as the club challenged for domestic honours.
His potential departure would therefore represent a significant change to the squad as the Buccaneers continue their campaign on multiple fronts.
Bahrain instead of Egypt?
Before the latest report emerged, speculation had linked Maswanganyi with a possible move to Pyramids FC in Egypt, potentially creating a reunion with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena.
However, the latest information points towards Bahrain rather than Egypt.
For now, no official announcement has been made regarding Maswanganyi’s next club. The identity of the Bahrain outfit and the final terms of the deal are expected to become clearer if negotiations are successfully concluded.
With his omission from the MTN8 clash now under renewed scrutiny, Maswanganyi’s Orlando Pirates future appears increasingly uncertain.
