Hugo Broos has officially designated Relebohile Mofokeng as the successor to "Mshishi" Zwane. Broos believes Mofokeng’s footballing brain is wasted on the wing and wants him pulling the strings as a Number 10.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has made a definitive call on the future of South African football’s brightest prospect. While many have viewed Relebohile Mofokeng as a traditional wide man, Broos has revealed a strategic shift: he sees the Orlando Pirates sensation as the natural successor to the legendary Themba Zwane in the “Number 10” role.

The Tactical Shift: From Winger to Playmaker

Despite Mofokeng’s success on the flanks for the Buccaneers, Broos believes the 21-year-old’s high footballing IQ and technical ability are better suited for a central role.

“He is not a winger… For me, he will not play anymore on the wing because I don’t think he is a winger. He doesn’t have the qualities to be a winger, but he can be a good number 10,” Broos told Sowetan. “With his intelligence and qualities, he can help the team a lot. It’s up to him now; I will give him a chance.”

Broos compared Mofokeng’s intuitive style to that of “Mshishi,” noting that while Sipho Mbule has shown flashes of brilliance in that role, the national team requires the consistency and tactical intelligence that Zwane has provided for over 50 caps.

Zwane Still the Standard

While the search for a successor is underway, Broos emphasized that the 36-year-old Themba Zwane remains the blueprint. Following his recovery from a long-term Achilles injury, Zwane is back in the mix at Mamelodi Sundowns. Broos highlighted Zwane’s unique ability to “let the team play” without needing constant instruction—a trait he is confident Mofokeng can emulate.

Form of a Future General

Mofokeng is already making a strong case for his new central identity. In Orlando Pirates’ recent 5-0 drubbing of Golden Arrows, Mofokeng was the architect of the victory, bagging a brace alongside Oswin Appollis. His performance underscored his readiness to take on more responsibility as Pirates hunt down Sundowns in the final seven matches of the title race.
