In what is being hailed as one of the most audacious signings in South African domestic rugby history, the Cheetahs have officially confirmed the acquisition of double Rugby World Cup winner Faf de Klerk. The veteran Springbok scrumhalf has signed a two-year deal that will see him head to the Free State in June 2026.
The move marks a significant homecoming for the 34-year-old, who will bring 60 caps of international experience to a squad currently overseen by fellow Springbok legend Frans Steyn.

De Klerk’s resume is among the most decorated in the modern era. A central figure in the Springboks’ 2019 and 2023 World Cup triumphs, he is world-renowned for his “giant-slayer” defensive style, tactical kicking precision, and high-tempo service from the ruck.
Beyond his international exploits—which include a pivotal role in the 2021 series win over the British & Irish Lions—De Klerk has starred for the Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan, the Sale Sharks in England, and the Lions in Johannesburg.

The Cheetahs management believes De Klerk’s arrival will transform the team’s competitive edge. Currently, the squad lacks active Springbok representation, making Faf’s leadership a vital component of Frans Steyn’s long-term strategy.
