Orlando Pirates have recognised two of their standout performers after announcing Ghampani Lungu and Thapelo Mokobodi as the club’s August and September Players of the Month.
The awards celebrate the contributions of the two players during an encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign, with both making significant impressions since joining the Soweto giants.
Zambian forward Lungu claimed the August accolade, while midfielder Mokobodi walked away with the September award.
Ghampani Lungu Shines After Joining Orlando Pirates
Lungu has wasted little time making his presence felt at Orlando Pirates following his arrival from Siwelele FC.
The Zambian international enjoyed an impressive August, featuring in six matches and accumulating close to 400 minutes of playing time.
His attacking contribution was particularly impressive, with the forward directly involved in four goals. He scored three times and provided one assist while creating eight scoring opportunities for his teammates.
One of his most memorable moments came during the MTN8 quarter-final against Durban City.
Lungu produced a spectacular volley in the 91st minute of extra time to secure victory for Pirates. The strike also earned him the Suzuki Goal of the Month award, further highlighting his impact in the early stages of his Pirates career.
His performances have demonstrated the attacking quality and determination he brings to Abdeslam Ouaddou’s squad.
Thapelo Mokobodi Earns September Recognition
Meanwhile, Thapelo Mokobodi has been rewarded for his growing influence in the Pirates midfield.
The 23-year-old joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC and has adapted quickly to the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.
Mokobodi has impressed with his composure, work rate, tactical awareness and ability to control the tempo of matches.
He also played an important role in Pirates’ MTN8 campaign, scoring the opening goal in their convincing 3-0 semi-final victory over Sekhukhune United.
His contribution did not end there. Later in September, the midfielder delivered an outstanding Man of the Match performance against Marumo Gallants, registering two assists.
His versatility and ability to influence games from the middle of the park have strengthened his position within the Pirates setup.
Pirates Receive Encouraging Signs From New Signings
The recognition of Lungu and Mokobodi highlights the positive impact both players have made since arriving at Orlando Pirates.
Lungu has brought goals and attacking creativity, while Mokobodi has added energy, control and balance to the midfield.
For coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, having new arrivals settle quickly and deliver consistent performances will be important as Pirates continue competing for domestic honours.
The Buccaneers will now hope both players can maintain their impressive form and remain influential throughout the season.
