Veteran South African actor Siyabonga Shibe, beloved for his powerhouse performances in Uzalo, Scandal!, and Rockville, is speaking out following a harrowing ordeal at a Bryanston restaurant. What began as a routine evening out turned into a cautionary tale about the rising trend of drink-spiking and theft targeting high-profile individuals and unsuspecting patrons alike.
The incident occurred after Shibe and a friend were approached by three women who appeared to be fans asking for photos. After a brief interaction, the women joined their table. Shibe reports that after momentarily leaving his drink and bag (containing a laptop and phones) unattended with the group, he and his friend were hit by an overwhelming wave of drowsiness.
The Cost of a Moment’s Trust
The pair managed to reach their vehicle but quickly lost consciousness. Upon waking, they discovered they had been cleaned out. The stolen items, including a high-end laptop, are valued at approximately R37,000.
“We should have taken all our things with us… nowadays it seems that’s the way things must be done, because you can’t trust anyone,” Shibe told the Sunday Times.
Official Investigation Underway
Police have confirmed that a case of theft was opened on April 20, 2026. While investigations are ongoing, no arrests have been made. Shibe’s decision to go public isn’t just about recovering his property—it’s a vital plea for public vigilance. He suspects a coordinated syndicate using the guise of “fan interactions” to scout and drug victims.
