The South African Journal on Human Rights (SAJHR), headquartered at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Law, is officially inviting applications for its 2026 Postgraduate Top-Up Bursary Programme.

Designed to support high-achieving LLM students, this initiative targets researchers dedicated to constitutional law, human rights, and the pursuit of justice within the South African legal landscape.


About the SAJHR

Established in 1985 by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), the SAJHR is South Africa’s premier public law journal. It serves as a global platform for scholarship that challenges, analyzes, and advances the principles of governance and human rights.

Bursary Details

  • Value: Up to R50,000 (once-off payment).
  • Purpose: To assist with tuition and study-related expenses.
  • Scope: One or more bursaries are awarded annually based on academic excellence and financial necessity.

Are You Eligible?

The SAJHR is committed to transforming the legal academic landscape. To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Demographics: Must be a Black South African or African student.
  • Academic Standing:
    • Hold a recently completed LLB from a South African university with a minimum 65% average.
    • Be currently registered for an LLM at a South African public university (First or Final year).
  • Research Focus: Thesis/Research must be in Constitutional Law, Human Rights Law, or Justice-related fields.
  • Institution Preference: Priority is given to graduates from Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs), including Fort Hare, Limpopo, Venda, Zululand, UWC, and Walter Sisulu University.

  1. Comprehensive CV.
  2. Certified ID (or Passport/Study Permit for African students).
  3. Full Academic Transcript.
  4. Two Referees (Contact details).
  5. Letter of Motivation: Detail your financial need and research goals.
  6. Financial Proof: Most recent student account statement.
