As the Springboks gear up for a blockbuster 2026 season—starting with a high-octane “warm-up” against the Barbarians and followed by a grueling July Test schedule—the competition for places has never been more intense.
With Rassie Erasmus set to unveil his first squad of the year, we take a look at the current hierarchy across the backline, identifying the frontrunners and the immediate challengers in every position.
The Fullback Duel (15)
- No. 1: Damian Willemse – Despite filling gaps on the wing for the Stormers recently, Willemse remains the undisputed first choice for the No. 15 jersey. His aerial dominance and playmaking ability are central to the Bok system.
- No. 2: Aphelele Fassi – After an injury-stint with the Sharks, a fit and firing “Weekend Special” is expected to push Willemse all the way. His counter-attacking flair provides a different dimension to the back three.
The Wing Wizards (14 & 11)
- Right Wing (14): Cheslin Kolbe – A non-negotiable selection. Kolbe’s footwork and defensive tenacity make him the world standard for the position.
- Challenger: Edwill van der Merwe – At 30, Van der Merwe has proven to be a reliable and clinical deputy who is expected to see significant game time this year.
- Left Wing (11): Kurt-Lee Arendse – The perfect partner to Kolbe. Arendse’s strike rate and work off the ball have made the No. 11 jersey his own.
- Challenger: Ethan Hooker – The versatile Sharks youngster is a rising star capable of covering wing and center, though he is currently navigating an injury recovery.
The Midfield Engines (13 & 12)
- Outside Centre (13): Jesse Kriel – The defensive lynchpin of the backline. While the competition is heating up, Kriel’s experience and physicality keep him at the top of the list.
- Challenger: Canan Moodie – The 23-year-old’s utility value is immense. Expect Moodie to push Kriel for starts, offering a leaner, more elusive option at 13.
- Inside Centre (12): Damian de Allende – With 97 caps, De Allende is an immovable force. His ability to gain “gainline” momentum is vital for the Springbok forwards.
- Challenger: Andre Esterhuizen – “The Giant” would start for almost any other nation. He remains the ultimate “Bomb Squad” weapon, bringing destructive power in the second half.
The Pivot Point (10)
- No. 1: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu – The 24-year-old’s rapid ascent continues. His vision and tactical flexibility currently place him as the preferred architect heading toward the next World Cup cycle.
- No. 2: Handre Pollard – While Manie Libbok remains in the mix, Pollard’s championship pedigree and elite goal-kicking give him the slight edge as the primary alternative.
The Service Providers (9)
- No. 1: Grant Williams – With the Boks frequently rotating their scrumhalves, Williams’ blistering pace makes him the favorite to start the season, especially with other veterans returning from knocks.
- No. 2: Cobus Reinach – Though currently sidelined, Reinach is expected to be fit for the international season. His experience will likely see him reintegrated via the bench to start.
