18-year-old Sharks and Junior Springbok prop Kai Pratt has flagged a positive test for an anabolic steroid. Get the details on the SAIDS investigation and B-sample request.

South African rugby has been rocked by a major anti-doping revelation after 18-year-old Sharks and Junior Springbok prop Kai Pratt returned an adverse analytical finding. The teenage front-row sensation—who has been heavily tipped as a future senior Springbok star—faces a potentially lengthy career derailment pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

What Prohibited Substance Was Found?

According to South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) CEO Khalid Galant, Pratt’s out-of-competition urine sample returned a positive result for an anabolic steroid.

The routine test was conducted during a Junior Springboks training camp in Stellenbosch. Anabolic steroids are strictly banned under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) protocols and are generally flagged due to their traits of:

  • Accelerating muscle tissue growth and physical power.
  • Drastically cutting down injury recovery times.
  • Boosting the production of red blood cells to increase athletic endurance.

Current Legal Status & The “B-Sample” Request

The disciplinary process is still in its infancy. Pratt and his legal counsel have officially exercised their right to have his B-sample analyzed to check if it confirms or contradicts the initial A-sample finding.

The SAIDS Process: “No hearing has been set, or decision has been rendered, and the ban only comes into place when a player has been charged and has pleaded guilty,” confirmed SAIDS CEO Khalid Galant. However, historical data shows that B-samples very rarely produce a different outcome than the initial test.

Potential Punishment and Sidelined Realities

If the B-sample confirms the presence of the steroid, the standard global sanction for intentional anabolic steroid use is a four-year suspension from all professional sport.

The news hits at an already difficult phase for the young prop. Pratt is currently recovering from major surgery following a severe foot injury sustained against Argentina U20, keeping him sidelined for at least six months regardless of the legal outcome.

The Sharks franchise has released a strict compliance statement:

“The Sharks take all matters relating to player welfare, education and compliance with anti-doping regulations extremely seriously. We remain committed to providing our players with the necessary guidance… while respecting the processes and rights of all parties involved.”
