Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef explains why Maboe, Shabalala, and Duba missed the win against Sekhukhune as Amakhosi seal CAF football.

Kaizer Chiefs have officially punched their ticket back to continental football! A disciplined 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium has secured a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and confirmed Amakhosi’s spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

While the result sparked celebrations among the faithful, the pre-match talk was dominated by the missing names on the team sheet. Co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has since cleared the air on why several stars were sidelined for the crucial encounter.

The Missing Stars: Injuries, Fatigue, and Suspensions

Supporters were quick to notice the absence of four key players. Ben Youssef broke down the specific reasons for each:

  • Lebohang Maboe (Fatigue): After a grueling run of fixtures, the medical team advised resting the midfielder to avoid a long-term setback. “We decided with the medical staff to give him a rest in this game,” Ben Youssef explained.
  • Wandile Duba & Mduduzi Shabalala (Injury): Both youngsters remain in the casualty ward as they continue their respective recoveries.
  • Siphesihle Ndlovu (Suspension): The midfielder was forced to sit out after accumulating four yellow cards.

Strategy: The Necessity of Rotation

With a mounting injury list and high-stakes matches, the technical team has had to pivot from their desire for a consistent starting XI to a more pragmatic rotation policy.

“We try to keep consistency in the team. But sometimes there is a risk of injury, so we should make rotation,” said Ben Youssef.

The coach was quick to praise the depth of the squad and the “next man up” mentality in the dressing room, noting that every player called upon has shown a readiness to “fight for the badge.”

Looking Ahead: The Continental Challenge

Securing a CAF Confederation Cup berth is a massive milestone for the club after several seasons of struggle. However, with the added workload of African travel and mid-week fixtures next season, the pressure is now on management to bolster the squad during the upcoming transfer window to ensure they can compete on all fronts.
