Naturena, South Africa — In a major development for South African football, Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed that their highly-rated academy graduate, Aden McCarthy, has finalized a permanent transfer to European side Sabah FK.
The 22-year-old central defender has put pen to paper on a 3+1 year contract (three years with an option to extend) with the Azerbaijan Premier League outfit. The deal brings an end to his successful development chapter at Naturena, paving the way for an exciting adventure on the global stage.

From Naturena to the World Stage
McCarthy’s meteoric rise is a testament to the success of the Amakhosi youth structures. After progressing steadily through the club’s development ranks and starring in the DStv Diski Challenge, he earned his senior debut toward the back end of the 2024/25 campaign.
The 2025/26 season proved to be his ultimate breakthrough year. McCarthy became an indispensable pillar in the Glamour Boys’ backline, making 33 appearances across all competitions and scoring twice. His defensive solidity helped steer Kaizer Chiefs to a strong third-place finish in the Betway Premiership, securing CAF Confederation Cup qualification for the club.
Instead of turning out in Africa, however, McCarthy’s immediate future lies in Europe. Sabah FK’s impressive league campaign means the young South African defender is heading straight into the action with a side qualified for the upcoming UEFA Champions League preliminary rounds.
“Fly the Amakhosi Flag High”
Speaking on the blockbuster transfer, Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. expressed immense pride in seeing another academy graduate make the leap to Europe:
“We can confirm that we have agreed to release Aden after being approached by Sabah FK. We are proud that he will compete in the qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League. We know Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe, and we are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”
McCarthy’s versatility, composed ball-playing ability, and aerial prowess make him well-suited for the rigorous demands of European football. Fans across South Africa will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on Azerbaijan to see how the former U-23 international adapts to his new home.
