Springbok loose forward Jean-Luc du Preez has officially fired back against growing rumors that a severe concussion battle would force him into premature retirement.

The abrasive 30-year-old loose forward has been sidelined since January after suffering a heavy head knock while playing for French Top 14 heavyweights Bordeaux Bègles. Speculation regarding his playing future reached a fever pitch last week when highly respected French publications Midi Olympique and Sud Ouest reported that the loose forward was on the verge of hanging up his boots due to repeated head traumas. Bordeaux president Laurent Marti even went as far as publicly stating that if Du Preez were his son, he would advise him to stop playing immediately.

However, speaking directly to South African Sunday newspaper Rapport, the powerful loose forward completely dismissed the panic, insisting his boots are staying firmly on.

The Road Recovery: Aiming for July Pre-Season

Rather than calling time on his elite rugby career, Du Preez revealed that his extended absence from the pitch was a calculated medical decision to protect his long-term health rather than an admission of defeat.

“I hope to be ready next season. We’re off for six weeks, then we start pre-season preparations. I hope to be ready for the pre-season, which starts at the end of July. I’ve seen several doctors and specialists and their recommendation was that I should rest until then.” — Jean-Luc du Preez

He further reassured fans that his recovery is firmly on track: “My symptoms have improved a lot over the last few months. I’m feeling a lot better at the moment. I just thought it was better not to take any chances this past season. I hope to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

A Change of Fortunes: Looking to the Future

The bruising loose forward, who last featured for the Springboks against Argentina in August 2023, has endured a wretched 18-month cycle of luck. Last year, a sudden illness cruelly robbed him of a starting jersey against the Wallabies in Pretoria, followed by a severe knee injury that wrecked his international season before his move to France.

Despite the recent alarming headlines out of Europe, time remains heavily on Du Preez’s side. At just 30 years old, a complete medical clearance ahead of the 2026/27 European season could see the former Sharks powerhouse dominate the physical landscape for at least another five years.
