Heartbreak for 20-year-old Junior Bok star Riley Norton as a severe hamstring injury ruins his scheduled Springbok debut against England. Read Rassie Erasmus's update.

In a cruel twist of fate, rising South African rugby star Riley Norton has seen his dream of a maiden international cap put on ice. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed that the uncapped 20-year-old lock has suffered a severe grade-three hamstring strain, sidelining him for the next eight to 10 weeks.

The injury strikes a massive blow to South Africa’s immediate second-row depth ahead of their high-profile three-Test series against England, Scotland, and Wales.

Denied a Dream Debut at Ellis Park

Norton, alongside Busi Moyo, had been fast-tracked directly out of the Junior Springbok squad competing at the U20 World Championship in Georgia to bolster the senior Test side. In a heartbreaking revelation, Erasmus admitted that the young titan wasn’t just there to make up the numbers—he was locked in to start against England this Saturday at Ellis Park.

“The plan was to play him in this game and then send him back to the Junior Boks for their playoffs,” Erasmus revealed. “Riley got injured in training, unfortunately. It was probably the second-last move of the session. He just pulled his hamstring while chasing.”

Second-Row Selection Headaches Deepen

Norton’s sudden 2-month absence compounds a growing availability crisis in the Springbok engine room. The towering youngster was expected to alleviate pressure on a heavily depleted lock department.

Providing a silver lining on the injury front, Erasmus shared updates on his veteran locks:

  • Franco Mostert (Ankle): Expected to return to action in two to three weeks.
  • Lood de Jäger (Illness): Nearing a recovery and potentially back in the mix by next week.

For now, the rugby world will have to wait a little longer to see one of Mzansi’s brightest prospects pull on the famous green and gold jersey.
