The mastermind behind South Africa’s modern rugby renaissance is about to etch his name even deeper into the history books. This Saturday at Ellis Park, Rassie Erasmus will officially tie Jake White as the most-capped head coach in Springbok history.
When the back-to-back world champions run out in Johannesburg, it will mark Erasmus’s 54th Test match at the helm of the national team.
Legend vs. Legend: The Historic Numbers
Rassie will match a long-standing milestone established by Jake White nearly two decades ago during his iconic 2004–2007 tenure, which culminated in lifting the Webb Ellis Cup in Paris.
While the two coaching giants will sit side-by-side on caps after this weekend, Erasmus’s overall statistical dominance underscores just how transcendent his era has been:
| Coach | Total Tests | Won | Lost | Drawn | Win % | Major Silverware |
| Jake White | 54 | 36 | 17 | 1 | 66.7% | 2007 Rugby World Cup |
| Rassie Erasmus | 53 * | 40 | 12 | 1 | 75.5% | 2019 & 2023 Rugby World Cups, 2021 British & Irish Lions Series |
*Equals record at 54 on Saturday.
Standing Alone at Loftus Versfeld
Erasmus’s tenure has completely redefined modern Test match rugby through pioneering squad depth strategies (the “Bomb Squad”) and tactical innovations.
While he shares the pedestal with White this weekend against England at Ellis Park, the record will belong entirely to him the following week. On Saturday, 11 July 2026, when the Springboks face Scotland at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria for the newly formed Nations Championship, Rassie Erasmus will take charge of his 55th Test, officially becoming the outright most-capped head coach in South African rugby history.
