Gqeberha – A Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student was fatally stabbed during a violent break-in at an off-campus residence in Summerstrand on the night of 13 October 2025.

According to police, an unidentified male suspect, believed to be around 25 years old, entered the student residence armed with a knife. During the attack, two students—aged 23 and 20—were assaulted. The 23-year-old died at the scene, while the second student sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed that the attacker fled the scene with two cellphones and a laptop. A manhunt is underway, and the suspect remains at large.

In a statement, NMU extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and expressed support for the injured student. The university also confirmed it is working closely with police on the investigation and is offering counselling and psychosocial support to students affected by the tragedy.

In response to the killing, several student organisations have planned a “Student Lives Matter March” for 14 October. Led by the South African Students Congress (SASCO), students are expected to present a memorandum to both police and university leadership.

“We demand the immediate implementation of the 72-hour arrest plan and the swift apprehension of those responsible,” SASCO said in a statement. The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) also confirmed its participation in the march.

The fatal attack has reignited student concerns over safety in and around campus. Just ten days earlier, on 4 October, students had marched from North End to City Hall, demanding better protection.

“That march wasn’t just symbolic—it was a desperate plea for help,” the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) at NMU said. “It is heartbreaking and infuriating that blood had to be shed before anyone took us seriously.”

The murder occurred as Gqeberha continues to grapple with a high violent crime rate. The city recorded a murder rate of 70.8 per 100,000 residents in 2023/24, making it the most violent city in South Africa. According to WorldAtlas, Gqeberha also ranks as the eighth most dangerous city in the world.

NMU, in collaboration with student organisations, held a night vigil in honour of the slain student on 16 October at 20:00. The event will took place at The Kraal on campus.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Sergeant Ridwaan Baatjies at 073 130 3018.
