Back to Campus: Fort Hare Students Return as University Recovery Plan Gains Momentum

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is making significant strides in its recovery following a period of violent protests. Vice-Chancellor Prof Sakhela Buhlungu has announced that students who have been studying remotely are now invited to return to campus as part of the institution’s phased reopening, which began in mid-October.

Prof Buhlungu praised the collective spirit that is driving the turnaround:

“I express my deepest gratitude to all members of staff… who have shown extraordinary resilience and commitment in the face of loss and disruption. I extend a special word of thanks to our students, who have demonstrated remarkable commitment to completing the academic year and adapting swiftly to new ways of learning.”

The UFH Recovery Plan

The university’s management has developed and implemented a comprehensive recovery plan, which has been endorsed by the Senate and shared with the Department of Higher Education and Training. The plan is focused on restoring normal operations and rebuilding institutional capacity.

Key updates to the academic schedule include:

  • The study period commenced on November 1.
  • Examinations are scheduled to begin on November 6.
  • Faculties will continue to provide updates regarding clinical training, internships, practicals, and postgraduate research to ensure the smooth conclusion of the academic year.

In a move to reaffirm its commitment to student participation, UFH will hold Student Representative Council (SRC) elections on November 13. No exams will take place on this day to ensure all students have the opportunity to vote.

Prof Buhlungu concluded by wishing students success: “I wish all students the best of luck with their preparations for the exams and finalisation of dissertations and theses.”
