Bafana Bafana face a major selection headache ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, with Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau ruled out.

Bafana Bafana are facing a difficult start to the new international cycle, with three key players set to miss the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

South Africa are scheduled to begin their qualification campaign against Guinea before welcoming Eritrea in September. However, whoever takes over as the new Bafana Bafana head coach will have to make immediate changes to the squad.

Three Bafana Stars Ruled Out

Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau are all facing injury setbacks, leaving major gaps across the team.

Mbokazi, who plays for Chicago Fire, has reportedly suffered a serious thigh injury, while Mokoena is dealing with an ankle problem. Mudau is also facing concerns over a possible Achilles injury.

Mokoena’s absence could be particularly significant given his importance in the Bafana midfield, while Mudau’s injury leaves the team without one of its established right-back options.

Mbokazi’s setback also creates another headache in defence, forcing the incoming coach to consider alternatives from the domestic Betway Premiership and South Africans playing abroad.

New Coach Thrown Into the Deep End

The timing could hardly be more challenging for the incoming Bafana boss.

South Africa are still waiting for a permanent head coach, with Pitso Mosimane previously linked with the position while reports have also suggested Gustavo Poyet is among the names being considered.

Whoever gets the job will have limited time to assess his options, settle on a tactical approach and prepare the squad before the crucial September fixtures.

The opening matches against Guinea and Eritrea could set the tone for South Africa’s AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

With three established players unavailable and a new coach still to be confirmed, SAFA has plenty of work to do before Bafana Bafana return to competitive action.
