Monnapule Saleng is going through a challenging period at Mamelodi Sundowns, with his representative insisting that his current situation is about more than disciplinary problems.
The 28-year-old winger has yet to make a first-team appearance this season after head coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed that he had been separated from the senior squad following disciplinary issues.
However, Saleng’s agent, Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse, says there are deeper factors behind the player’s difficulties.
Saleng’s Problems ‘Go Beyond Misconduct’
Speaking on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, Mathang-Tshabuse said she was mindful of protecting Saleng’s privacy but felt it was important to provide context around his struggles.
According to his agent, the challenges have followed Saleng through different stages of his career, including his time at Orlando Pirates and his loan spell at Orbit College FC.
She argued that describing the situation simply as bad behaviour does not tell the full story.
Mathang-Tshabuse said she had observed what she described as a psychological safety issue, while stressing that she is not qualified to make a medical diagnosis.
She has nevertheless attempted to help Saleng access appropriate support, while acknowledging that mental-health assistance cannot simply be imposed on someone who is struggling.
Sundowns Give Saleng Time and Space
The agent believes Mamelodi Sundowns have recognised that Saleng’s situation may be more complicated than disciplinary matters and have given the player some space to deal with his difficulties.
She also addressed speculation about alcohol, saying she was not personally aware of an alcohol problem, although she had heard concerns from people around the player.
For now, Saleng’s return to competitive football remains uncertain.
The priority appears to be helping the talented winger work through his difficulties before he can return to the pitch.
Can Saleng overcome this difficult period and rediscover his best form at Sundowns?
