Former Orlando Pirates icon Steve Lekoelea has confessed his deep admiration for the “fabulous” and structured style of football played by Mamelodi Sundowns, despite his lifelong loyalty to the Buccaneers.
Lekoelea, who notably wore the sacred Pirates number 10 jersey before it was retired, believes the reigning champions have fundamentally raised the standard of South African football.

Why Lekoelea Rates Sundowns’ Approach
The Sebokeng-born legend, affectionately known as “Chippa,” emphasized that the quality of football displayed by Sundowns is exceptionally rare in the local game.
“Only those with a football brain can see it, their style is not from here. It’s on another level,” Lekoelea told KickOff.com. “I’m a Bhakaniya through and through, my blood is black and white. But I love Mamelodi Sundowns because of the way they play football. They are never in a hurry, they wait for the right moment.”
He noted that observing the Tshwane giants is a testament to the progress South African football has made.

Faith in the Buccaneers
While highly complimentary of Sundowns, Lekoelea maintained his full support for his former club. He expressed pride in the way Abdeslam Ouaddou’s Pirates side is competing this season.
“Sundowns might not be like last season, but they are still strong. I’m happy to see Orlando Pirates competing with them… I’m proud to see Orlando Pirates competing,” he concluded, highlighting his belief that the Buccaneers are showing the necessary strength to challenge for the league title.
