Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been pictured back in the country and in club colours at Orlando Stadium, despite being on the verge of a major transfer to MLS side Chicago Fire.
The 20-year-old centre-back, who recently traveled to Chicago for transfer talks (presumably with Pirates’ permission), is reportedly the subject of an agreed-upon R51 million transfer fee between the two clubs.

A Rapid Rise and Overseas Opportunity
This impending move marks a significant peak in Mbokazi’s career, which has rapidly accelerated in 2025. This year alone, the Hluhluwe-born defender has achieved:
- His Orlando Pirates first-team debut.
- His Bafana Bafana debut.
- His imminent move abroad to the MLS.
Future Fixtures and Departure Timeline
Mbokazi was not expected to feature in Pirates’ recent Betway Premiership victory over Chippa United, but his appearance back with the squad raises immediate questions for supporters:
- Carling Knockout Cup Final: Will Mbokazi play in the upcoming final against Marumo Gallants next weekend? If he does, it is likely to be his final match for the club.
- AFCON Commitment: Following the cup final, the defender is expected to join the Bafana Bafana AFCON squad next month.
- MLS Move: After the continental tournament, Mbokazi could finalize his move to Chicago Fire. The MLS transfer window opens on January 31st and runs until April 23rd
