The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is in shock following the unexpected death of celebrated actor Odira Nwobu, who passed away in South Africa at the age of 43.

The tragic news was confirmed by the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and the actor’s lawyer, Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi, who provided details regarding the star’s final moments.
Found in Distress at Johannesburg Hotel
Nwobu, known for his roles in over 60 movies, died on Monday, November 24, 2025, while staying at a hotel in Benoni, Johannesburg.
His legal representative stated that the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, as they are awaiting the results of the official postmortem examination.
According to his lawyer, the actor had returned to his hotel room after spending the evening with colleagues. He was later found in distress, reportedly struggling to breathe. Although an ambulance was immediately called and paramedics attempted to revive him using a defibrillator, the efforts were unsuccessful.
“Odira died at the scene,” Chukwudi confirmed, noting that the actor was alone when the medical incident occurred.

South Africa Trip for Business Engagement
The president of the AGN, Emeka Rollas, explained the reason for the actor’s visit to South Africa. Nwobu had traveled with a group of influencers for a business engagement, helping to promote a real estate company owned by a Nigerian entrepreneur. His lawyer was accompanying the group in an official capacity as a legal adviser.
