Amapiano star Zee Nxumalo ensured she was a talking point at the 31st South African Music Awards (SAMAs) by wearing a controversial gown designed by multi-talented media personality and recent fashion graduate, Somizi Mhlongo.

Somizi’s designs became a central theme of the night’s fashion discussion, having also created a highly criticized white gown for fellow artist Makhadzi. While Makhadzi’s look drew significant public outcry, Zee Nxumalo’s ambitious outfit ignited a mixed social media response, attracting both strong praise and notable backlash.
Sharing her SAMA photos, Zee quoted Somizi, suggesting the dramatic look was purposeful: “Somizi said ‘Zee let’s put on a show’ at the SAMAs.”
However, reactions on social media platform X were sharply divided. Some critics focused on the perceived lack of quality in the design, with one user claiming, “Somizi is an incredible person, but fashion is not his strength… this garment reflects that lack of fashion sense.” Others questioned the sincerity behind celebrity endorsements, suggesting that stars prioritize “protecting friendship” and showing support over fashion honesty, even if the garment is considered “trash.” Comments also included concerns over comfort (“Doesn’t look comfortable at all!”) and sharp observations like, “He did Makhadzi dirty.”
The episode places a spotlight on Somizi Mhlongo’s nascent career as a fashion designer and the immediate, often brutal, scrutiny that celebrity fashion faces on major public stages.
