Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed a significant European move for one of South Africa’s brightest young talents. Thapelo Maseko has completed a loan switch to Cypriot First Division outfit AEL Limassol, marking the 22-year-old’s first foray into European football.
The move comes after a period of limited game time for the explosive winger at Chloorkop, following a series of nagging injuries and stiff competition within the “Brazilians” star-studded attacking department.

Transfer Details & The European Dream
- The Deal: A season-long loan agreement until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
- The Destination: AEL Limassol, one of Cyprus’s most historic clubs, based in the coastal city of Limassol. They are currently looking to bolster their attack to push for a top-six finish in the Protathlima Cyta.
- The Motivation: Mamelodi Sundowns leadership believes that regular minutes in a competitive European league will help Maseko rediscover the form that saw him win the AFCON 2023 Young Player of the Tournament accolade.
Player Profile: What AEL Limassol is Getting
Thapelo Maseko is widely regarded as one of the fastest players in African football. Known for his “jet-fuel” pace and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, he was a marquee signing for Sundowns from SuperSport United in 2023.
While his time at Sundowns was highlighted by a spectacular winning goal in the African Football League (AFL) final, this move to Cyprus is seen as a strategic “stepping stone” toward Europe’s top-five leagues.
