Construction Begins on Akademia’s Landmark Afrikaans University Campus

The “Toekomsbouer” (Future Builder) vision is now a physical reality. Developed by the Solidarity Movement in partnership with Kanton, this project represents the largest private investment in Afrikaans-language higher education in South African history.

Phase 1: Building the Academic Heart (2026–2027)

With R1.8 billion allocated to this initial stage, the focus is on creating a high-tech academic hub capable of housing thousands of students by 2028. Key features include:

• Architectural Marvels: A 20-meter-high glass and steel dome and the “Die Poort” entrance featuring eight 18-meter arches.
• Student Lifestyle: A 2,500m² student center and initial residences for 750 students (scaling to 1,500).
• Cultural Spaces: A 1,500-seat amphitheater and a tranquil chapel plaza surrounded by water canals.
• Academic Excellence: State-of-the-art lecture halls and laboratories to support five growing faculties.

The Path to “University” Status

Historically, only public institutions could use the title “University” in South Africa. However, following the October 2025 policy shift by the Department of Higher Education and Training, the door is now open for private institutions like Akademia to officially register as universities.

Akademia, which has grown from 40 students in 2012 to over 3,800 students today, is strategically positioning itself to be among the first private entities to claim the “University” moniker as it expands into its new home.
