In a move to empower the next generation of change agents, Unisa’s Office of the Dean of Students recently participated in the prestigious Mandela-Sobukwe Peer Leadership Camp.
Led by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, the Honourable Buti Manamela, this intensive four-day programme (10–14 February 2026) aimed to equip young students with the tools to influence local, continental, and global futures.
A Commitment to Student Development
The participation of Unisa’s peer educators aligns with the Office of the Dean of Students’ dedication to co-curricular development. By fostering skills beyond academics, the office ensures students are prepared for holistic leadership roles in society.
Immersive Leadership Training
Peer educators, including Unisa’s Kheto Siphesihle Simelane, were immersed in a rigorous curriculum built on the legacies of South African icons Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe.
The camp provided a unique platform for young leaders to:
- Brainstorm Solutions: Address critical challenges facing South African youth through innovative thinking.
- Engage with Experts: Converse with leading minds on leadership principles, psychosocial wellness, and health.
- Explore Global Issues: Gain insights into technology, artificial intelligence, climate change, and cultural diversity.
Aligning with National Goals
Participants were deeply engaged with the country’s history and the National Development Plan, focusing on driving sustainable change for the future. The experience acknowledged the unwavering commitment of these students to service through the Higher Health Peer Education Programme.
