Poet and activist Ntsiki Mazwai has left fans stunned after revealing the harrowing details of a near-death health crisis that saw her hospitalized for an entire month. The outspoken cultural critic shared that she is finally back home, following a terrifying ordeal that began in late March and left her fighting for her life.
A Life-Threatening Diagnosis
Ntsiki’s condition was far more serious than many realized. She revealed that she was diagnosed with a dangerous combination of malaria, pneumonia, and jaundice. Describing her state at the peak of the illness, she admitted she was “hanging onto life on a thin string” and credited her family’s quick intervention for her survival.
The Sisters Who Saved Her
The activist penned a deeply emotional tribute to her sisters, highlighting the strength of the Mazwai bond:
- Nomsa Mazwai: Ntsiki credited her younger sister for finding her “half alive” and rushing her to the hospital without hesitation. “I might not have survived if help had not arrived when it did,” she reflected.
- Thandiswa Mazwai: The legendary singer was Ntsiki’s anchor during her month-long stay. Thandiswa visited daily, brought home-cooked meals to replace “hospital food,” and stayed through the nights to help Ntsiki navigate trauma-induced nightmares.
After being discharged, Ntsiki spent her initial recovery period at Thandiswa’s home, where she was nursed back to health with shared meals, movie sessions, and constant emotional support.
A Shoutout to Public Healthcare
In true Ntsiki fashion, she used her platform to challenge social perceptions. Despite her critical state, she spent time at both Milpark and Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, and she was vocal about the quality of care she received in the public sector.
“Guys, our public health care system DOES work. And it’s fine. Ignore the elitism,” she noted, praising the medical teams who stabilized her.
A Renewed Perspective
Reflecting on the month of trauma, Ntsiki shared that the experience stripped away everything but the essentials: love and health. She concluded her update by stating that this “season of illness” served as a profound reminder of the blessings and the iron-clad support system she has in her family and friends.
