The University of South Africa (Unisa) is shifting the paradigm of distance learning from mere academic degree-attainment to active economic participation. On Wednesday, 18 February 2026, leadership from Unisa’s Inhlanyelo Hub NPC and the Gauteng Region met at the Sunnyside Regional Centre to solidify a partnership that places entrepreneurship at the heart of student support.
With a student population exceeding 100,000 in the Gauteng province alone, this collaboration aims to turn regional centers into “hubs of excellence” where innovation, technology, and business-building take center stage.
Redefining Support: From Academic Help to Economic Power
The core of this strategic alignment is the belief that a degree is no longer enough. Unisa is redefining student support to include:
- Practical Entrepreneurship: Integrating business training as a tool to fight poverty and stimulate job creation.
- Technology-Mediated Learning: Leveraging digital tools to ensure students are tech-savvy and market-ready.
- Regional Impact: Moving innovation out of the boardroom and into the local service centers where students live and study.

Strategic Action: Turning Plans into Practice
To ensure this wasn’t just another high-level meeting, Dr. Erin Marie Naudé (Acting Regional Director) and Dr. Tapiwa Muzata (Inhlanyelo Hub) outlined a concrete roadmap for the Gauteng Region:
| Initiative | Implementation Detail |
| The Bosadi Sewing Project | The Sunnyside Regional Centre will pilot this project, training 15 participants in sustainable garment production and business management. |
| Creative Media Cohort | Regional computer labs will be repurposed to host the Inhlanyelo Hub’s Creative Media students, providing high-end tech for digital content creation. |
| Infrastructure Sharing | Gauteng Region facilities will now double as incubators for innovation and entrepreneurship workshops. |
| Hardware Support | The region has committed to activating new laptops for the Hub to ensure program delivery remains uninterrupted. |
A Future-Focused Leadership
The meeting concluded with a formalized commitment to accountability and sustainable growth. By embedding innovation within the regional offices, Unisa is ensuring that excellence is not a distant campus concept, but a community-driven reality.
As Dr. Naudé and the leadership team emphasized, the goal is to create graduates who don’t just look for jobs—they create them.
