The University of South Africa (Unisa) is shifting the paradigm of distance learning from mere academic degree-attainment to active economic participation. On Wednesday, 18 February 2026, leadership from Unisa’s Inhlanyelo Hub NPC and the Gauteng Region met at the Sunnyside Regional Centre to solidify a partnership that places entrepreneurship at the heart of student support.

With a student population exceeding 100,000 in the Gauteng province alone, this collaboration aims to turn regional centers into “hubs of excellence” where innovation, technology, and business-building take center stage.

Redefining Support: From Academic Help to Economic Power

The core of this strategic alignment is the belief that a degree is no longer enough. Unisa is redefining student support to include:

  • Practical Entrepreneurship: Integrating business training as a tool to fight poverty and stimulate job creation.
  • Technology-Mediated Learning: Leveraging digital tools to ensure students are tech-savvy and market-ready.
  • Regional Impact: Moving innovation out of the boardroom and into the local service centers where students live and study.
