From 3 to 6 March 2026, The University of Cape Town (UCT) became the epicenter of global intellectual diplomacy. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela, UCT played host to the prestigious International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Presidents’ Meeting, welcoming the heads of 11 of the world’s most influential academic institutions.

A Summit for Strategy and Innovation
The four-day summit brought together global educational leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges facing modern research and society. The agenda focused on six core pillars:
- Research & Innovation: Advancing the frontiers of science and technology.
- Strategic Collaboration: Building cross-border partnerships to solve global crises.
- Value Creation: Translating academic excellence into societal impact.
- Leadership Diplomacy: Navigating the role of universities in international relations.
- Strategic Influence: Strengthening the voice of research in policy-making.
The Oxford Connection: Prof. Irene Tracey’s Open Lecture
A major highlight of the programme was the VC’s Open Lecture, delivered on Thursday, 5 March. The keynote speaker was the distinguished Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Her address underscored the shared commitment between Oxford and UCT in fostering excellence and leadership within the global research community.
