In a powerful display of international cooperation, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) recently hosted a high-level meet-and-greet with the Johannesburg Chinese Consulate at the Ubuntu Chambers. The event, organized by UJ’s Division for Global Engagement, served as a vibrant reflection on five years of strategic partnership that has bridged the gap between financial constraint and academic excellence.
At the heart of the celebration was the flagship scholarship program launched in 2021, which has already funneled R650,000 into the futures of 35 deserving international students.

A Strategic Vision for Research and Innovation
Professor Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya, UJ’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, set a forward-looking tone for the day. She emphasized that the bond between UJ and the People’s Republic of China transcends mere funding—it is a cornerstone of the university’s global research and teaching strategy.
“We perceive this partnership as strategic, collaborative, and rooted in academic excellence… we want to reaffirm UJ’s commitment to deepening cooperation across teaching, research, and innovation.” — Prof. Phaswana-Mafuya
From Youth Dialogues to “China by Train”
Consul General Pan Qingjiang echoed these sentiments, noting that the relationship has evolved into a multi-faceted exchange. Beyond the scholarships, the partnership has pioneered initiatives like “China by Train” and various youth dialogues, acting as a catalyst for cultural and intellectual growth for both South African and Chinese students.
“With our joint efforts, we have forged a very strong partnership,” Qingjiang stated, reaffirming that the collaboration between Chinese universities and UJ will continue to grow “from strength to strength.”
The Voices of Impact: “More Than Just a Token”
The most moving moments of the afternoon came from the scholarship recipients themselves, who highlighted the human element of the partnership:
- Takunda Dhokotera (3rd Year Mechanical Engineering): The Zimbabwean student spoke passionately about the program’s role in restoring student pride. “This is not just a mere token of money, but also an opportunity to amass knowledge. It is about dignity, and that is much, much more.”
- Shantel Machinya (3rd Year Computer Science): She described the consulate’s support as a “powerful statement of belief” in the transformative potential of education and cross-cultural dialogue, thanking UJ leadership for ensuring these opportunities are sustained for future generations.
A Legacy of Confidence
Closing the event, Professor Sarah Gravett, Acting Senior Director of Global Engagement, noted the visible transformation in the students. She thanked the consulate for helping “young, scared people” evolve into “confident young people,” calling the contribution truly life-changing.
As UJ continues to expand its global footprint, this partnership stands as a prime example of how international diplomacy can be successfully leveraged to fuel domestic academic success and societal progress.
