There will be no draws! SA Rugby confirms tie-breaker plans for the 2026 Springboks vs All Blacks four-Test series. View the full 2026 schedule here.

The rugby world is bracing for the “Greatest Rivalry” tour in 2026, and organizers have made one thing clear: there will be no shared trophies. As the Springboks and All Blacks prepare for a historic four-Test series, officials are finalizing tie-breaker protocols to ensure a definitive winner emerges if the series ends in a 2-2 deadlock.

The tour, which marks 30 years since New Zealand’s last full-scale visit to South Africa, will culminate in a groundbreaking final Test hosted in Baltimore, USA.

The Quest for a Series Winner

With a four-match format, the mathematical possibility of a draw is high. However, SA Rugby’s GM of operations, Yusuf Jackson, confirmed that both nations have rejected the idea of a stalemate.

  • The Consensus: When asked if they would share the trophy in Baltimore, both teams gave a resounding “No.”
  • Tie-Break Options: Officials are currently deliberating between extra-time and sudden death (golden point) scenarios. These discussions are balancing the need for a result with player welfare and match integrity.
  • Finality: There are no plans for a “decider” fifth match due to the congested 2026 schedule; the result must be decided on the night of the final Test in the United States.

A Tour for the Ages

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer highlighted that this tour isn’t just about the national teams. The All Blacks will also face South Africa’s four major franchises, giving local fans and players a rare opportunity to engage with international opposition on a club level.

“Today’s announcement promises more drama, physicality, strategy, and unpredictability in a rivalry regarded as one of the most intense in world sport.” — Rian Oberholzer
