Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok will leave Japan and return to South Africa after signing a multi-year deal with the Sharks from July 2027.

The Sharks have secured a major signing ahead of the 2027/28 season, confirming that Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok will return to South Africa after his spell in Japanese rugby.

Libbok has agreed to join the Durban-based franchise on a multi-year contract, with his arrival scheduled for July 2027.

The move marks another chapter in the career of one of South Africa’s most recognisable playmakers, who will be looking to make a significant impact in the Sharks’ plans under head coach JP Pietersen.

Manie Libbok heading back to the Sharks

Libbok is currently playing for Japan’s Hanazono Kintetsu Liners, but has now committed his future to the Sharks.

It will be a return to familiar surroundings for the flyhalf, who previously had a short spell with the Durban franchise during the 2020/21 season.

The 30-plus-Test Springbok has enjoyed an eventful career in South African rugby. After coming through the Bulls system and spending time at the Sharks, he made his name as a standout performer for the Stormers.

His performances in Cape Town helped establish him as a leading contender for the Springbok number 10 jersey. He also played an important role in the Stormers’ historic 2021/22 United Rugby Championship title triumph.

Now, Libbok is preparing to bring his experience and attacking ability back to Durban.

Why Libbok chose the Sharks

For the experienced playmaker, the decision to return to the Sharks is about more than simply signing another rugby contract.

Libbok said he was excited by the club’s direction and the opportunity to be part of its future.

He also highlighted his conversations with Pietersen, explaining that the coach’s vision for the team convinced him that Durban was the right destination for the next stage of his career.

The flyhalf believes the Sharks are building something special and is eager to contribute to the club’s ambitions.

His return will also give the franchise an experienced option in a key position, with his ability to control matches and create attacking opportunities likely to be valuable.

JP Pietersen welcomes a major signing

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has made no secret of his excitement about bringing Libbok back to the club.

Pietersen described the flyhalf as a game-changing player whose creativity and attacking instincts fit the style of rugby the Sharks want to play.

The coach also pointed to Libbok’s attitude and desire to contribute to the team’s long-term development.

For Pietersen, the signing is not only about adding an experienced Springbok to the squad. It is also about bringing in a player who can help establish the culture and identity the Sharks are working towards.

Libbok’s experience at international and franchise level could make him an important influence on the younger players in the squad.

What Manie Libbok’s return means for the Sharks

The Sharks have been working towards building a competitive squad under Pietersen, and Libbok’s arrival represents a significant addition to those plans.

His attacking instincts, passing ability and experience at the highest level could give the Durban side another dimension.

The timing of his return will also attract attention as South African rugby prepares for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

For now, the Sharks will have to wait until July 2027 before Libbok officially links up with the squad.

One thing is clear: the Springbok flyhalf is looking forward to wearing the black and white jersey again.
