Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will be awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold by President Cyril Ramaphosa for his inspirational leadership.

Springbok mastermind Johan “Rassie” Erasmus is set to solidify his legendary status in South African history. On Tuesday, the World Cup-winning director of rugby will be officially awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold—the nation’s highest civil honor for excellence in sports, arts, and culture.

The presidential accolade comes just two years after he received an honorary doctorate from North-West University (NWU) for his revolutionary management, meaning the man who united a nation will officially add another glittering milestone to his unparalleled resume.

“Inspirational Leadership” That United a Nation

The Presidency confirmed that Erasmus is being recognized not just for the tactical genius that secured back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, but for the profound social impact his teams have had on the fabric of the country.

In an official statement, the Presidency lauded his contribution:

“Johan Rassie Erasmus: For his inspirational leadership in national and international rugby that has propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup Championships.

Victory on the field of play has advanced social cohesion among South Africans and raised the nation’s esteem in the international community.”

The national orders recognize pioneers who foster diversity, inclusion, and the democratic values of a prosperous South Africa—ideals that Rassie’s “Stronger Together” Springbok ethos perfectly embodies.

In the Highest Company

President Cyril Ramaphosa will personally bestow the National Orders on Tuesday, celebrating elite citizens and international figures across various categories, including the Order of Ikhamanga, the Order of the Baobab, the Order of Mapungubwe, and the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo.

For Rassie, the induction into the highest echelon of South African civil society is a fitting tribute to a career spent defying the odds and rewriting the rugby playbook.
