Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has pulled off another trademark last-minute roll of the dice. With the club teetering on the edge of the relegation playoff precipice, the Chilli Boyz have officially appointed Brandon “Brakkies” Truter as their new head coach.
Truter’s mandate is simple yet terrifying: save Chippa United from the drop in their final Betway Premiership match of the season against third-place Kaizer Chiefs this Saturday, May 23.
Sinking in the Danger Zone
The Gqeberha-based outfit has plummeted to 13th on the Betway Premiership log with just 25 points, brought on by a demoralizing 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows on home turf last weekend.
While automatically safe for the moment, Chippa are mathematically just one bad result away from falling into the dreaded 15th spot. If they lose to Amakhosi at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and other bottom-tier results work against them, Truter will find his short-term rescue gig extended by six agonizing matches in the mini-league promotion/relegation playoffs against Cape Town City FC and Milford FC.
Meanwhile, second-tier champions Kruger United have already locked down automatic promotion, meaning only the promotion/relegation playoff spot remains wide open.
The Six-Coach Merry-Go-Round
Truter was introduced to the squad on Monday afternoon, bringing an abrupt end to assistant coach Hlanga Dikeni’s temporary spell in charge. Remarkably, Truter is the sixth different person to lead the technical team this season—following in the footsteps of Sinethemba Badela, Musa Nyatama, Luc Eymael, and Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
Known in South African football circles as a survival specialist, the former Moroka Swallows, AmaZulu, and Sekhukhune United mentor has just a few days on the training pitch to completely steady a sinking ship.
Kick-off for the high-stakes finale in Durban is scheduled for 15:00 on Saturday.
The Nightmare Contingency: PSL Playoff Schedule
If Truter cannot secure a result against Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United face a gruelling winter safety battle:
