South African music icon Sjava has shared a deeply moving, behind-the-scenes look at the raw hustle, sacrifice, and spiritual conviction that built the foundations of African Trap Movement (ATM) and SA Hip Hop royalty.
Long before the platinum plaques and chart-topping hits, Sjava, producer Ruff, and a young Emtee were just trying to survive—fueled entirely by a shared vision.
Unit 1020: Where the Empire Began
Sjava recalled a time when he and Ruff were facing severe financial hardship. Against the odds, they managed to secure a small living space: Unit number 1020. It was inside those walls that the name and concept of the 1020 Cartel was officially born.
Recognizing an unmistakable spark in Emtee, Sjava and Ruff invited him to move into the apartment with a blunt but honest warning:
“We told him we had nothing. We said he would have to eat whatever we were eating, but we promised we would figure things out together.”
Turning Down Security for Destiny
The road to stardom required absolute leap of faith. Sjava revealed that Emtee actually had a stable corporate opportunity on the table—a job at a bank. Recognizing that a routine desk job could extinguish Emtee’s musical genius, Sjava strongly encouraged him to walk away from it.
Sjava’s belief in their collective future was so absolute that he even told his own parents he wasn’t looking for a plan B because they were destined for massive success.
“I knew in my spirit that this is the guy who will take us to the promised land,” Sjava shared. “He was born with it. Even when he falls, he always gets back up. And whoever is around him during that time will succeed.”
