The experimental phase is officially over, and reality is setting in for Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi wrapped up their historic pre-season tour of Spain without a single victory, concluding their European camp with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Spanish side Elche CF.
While highly-rated prospect Asanele Velebayi provided a late consolidation goal, the performance did little to mask a worrying truth: despite structural changes under the new technical team, the Glamour Boys are carrying old, costly habits into the 2026/27 campaign.
The Elche Reality Check
Unlike their previous stalemates against Rangers FC and Al-Kholood, head coach Fernando Da Cruz fielded a near-full-strength, luxury starting XI against Elche. Yet, Chiefs looked comfortably second best for vast periods of the match, falling behind 2-0 before mounting a late fightback.
With the exception of Luke Baartman and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, this line-up heavily mirrored the core squad that stumbled to a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership last season—proving that a change in leadership hasn’t automatically cured the team’s underlying flaws.
Key Vulnerabilities Exposed in Spain
- Defensive Fragility: The backline struggled heavily to cope with Elche’s high-intensity movement, shipping two goals. The silver lining? New defensive additions Thabo Moloisane and Bradley Cross did not start and are highly expected to shore up the structural gaps once integrated.
- A Toothless Frontline: The biggest headache remains in the final third. Chiefs looked devoid of ideas, lacking a clinical edge and creating very few clear-cut chances. While leading striker Flávio Silva has looked sharp throughout the tour, the over-reliance on him is reaching dangerous levels.
If Amakhosi plan to challenge for serious domestic honors, management must aggressively hunt for another proven, elite attacking option before the transfer window slams shut.
Heading Home for the Toyota Cup
The squad will now land back in South Africa with plenty of tactical homework to do. They immediately turn their focus to the upcoming Toyota Cup, where they will host Zimbabwean outfit Scottland FC at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday, 26 July 2026 (Kick-off at 15:00).
