Over three grueling days of competition at Wits’ Marks Park Sportsgrounds, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) U20 Women’s Football Team put on a display of grit, tactical brilliance, and attacking flair at the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge.
Guided by Head Coach Andisiwe Mgcoyi, the young Orange Army surged through an unbeaten run all the way to the final showpiece against Mamelodi Sundowns, proving that the future of South African women’s football is firmly rooted in Auckland Park.

Day 1: Setting the Tone (17 July)
- UJ 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns: The starlets kicked off their campaign with a tactical chess match against heavyweights Sundowns, holding their ground to secure a crucial opening point.
- UJ 4-0 Rosina Sedibane: The offense exploded in match two, with second-half substitutes Kusaselihle Shibase and Nobahle Mdelwa both netting brilliant braces to seal a dominant 4-0 victory.
Day 2: Championship DNA (18 July)
- UJ 1-1 SAFA Academy: Showing incredible mental fortitude, UJ grinded out a tough draw against elite developmental talent.
- UJ 1-0 JVW: In a high-stakes group decider, UJ displayed defensive resilience to claim a tight 1-0 win and book their knockout ticket undefeated.
Day 3: Semi-Final Triumph & The Final Showpiece (19 July)
- Semi-Final (UJ 3-1 Mamelodi XI Stars): Playing fluid, precise football, UJ dismantled Stars 3-1 to stamp their authority and secure a spot in the grand finale.
- The Final (UJ 0-2 Mamelodi Sundowns): Playing their sixth match in under 72 hours, the UJ warriors fought valiantly before ultimately falling 2-0 to Sundowns in a tightly contested rematch.

While UJ took home the team silver medal, standout defender Portia Masilela was officially named the Defender of the Tournament for her heroic performances across the weekend.
