Former Kaizer Chiefs winger and outspoken football analyst Junior Khanye has questioned the club’s decision to sign Adolf Mtasingwa, arguing that the midfielder failed to show enough quality during his first start for Amakhosi.
Chiefs were knocked out of the MTN8 after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Golden Arrows, with Mtasingwa among the players under the spotlight following the disappointing result.
Khanye Unimpressed by Mtasingwa
Mtasingwa was the only one of Chiefs’ new recruits to start against Golden Arrows, but his performance did little to convince Khanye that the Tanzanian midfielder represents a significant upgrade for the squad.
The former Chiefs star questioned whether the club could have found a better option closer to home, particularly given the level of talent available in South African football.
Khanye argued that a midfielder playing at international level should be capable of taking on defenders, turning under pressure and progressing the ball more confidently.
Instead, he felt Mtasingwa played too conservatively.
‘Isn’t There a Kid in Soweto Better?’
Khanye’s assessment was particularly blunt, questioning whether Chiefs could have recruited a young player from areas such as Soweto or Daveyton who could offer more in midfield.
He also warned that Lebohang Maboe could be placed under unnecessary pressure if the midfield lacks sufficient support and depth.
The criticism comes after just one start, meaning Mtasingwa will have an opportunity to respond on the pitch as he becomes more familiar with Chiefs and the demands of the PSL.
Khanye Compares Him to Akumu
Khanye also drew comparisons between Mtasingwa and former Chiefs midfielder Akumu Agay, suggesting he did not see enough to convince him that the new signing was an improvement in midfield.
He also singled out Thabo Cele, describing him as a more accurate passer while questioning another aspect of the midfielder’s game.
Whether Khanye’s assessment proves accurate will ultimately depend on how Mtasingwa performs over the course of the season rather than one difficult cup outing.
Chiefs Turn Attention to the Betway Premiership
The MTN8 disappointment is now behind Chiefs, with their focus shifting back to league football.
Amakhosi face Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, giving Mtasingwa another potential opportunity to make an impression.
Meanwhile, attention will also be on fellow new signing Langelihle Phili, who made his debut from the bench against Golden Arrows and could be in contention for a starting role.
