Orlando Pirates are preparing for another demanding campaign, with the Buccaneers competing across five competitions and potentially standing to earn more than R100 million in prize money if they achieve major trophy success.
After a hugely successful previous campaign, Pirates have strengthened their squad and will now attempt to maintain their momentum under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The Buccaneers are already through to the MTN8 semi-finals, while their ambitions extend across both domestic and continental football.
Pirates chasing another trophy-laden season
Pirates reportedly collected close to R40 million from their trophy-winning campaign last season. The club will now be hoping that an even stronger squad can deliver another lucrative season.
The MTN8 is already within reach, with Pirates looking to extend their remarkable dominance in the competition. They have won the tournament in four consecutive editions from 2022 through 2025, following their earlier 2020 triumph.
The bigger financial opportunity, however, comes from combining success in the domestic competitions with a deep run in the CAF Champions League.
CAF’s current Champions League prize structure has been significantly increased, with the champions set to receive US$6 million under the 2026 prize-money structure.
Squad depth could be Pirates’ biggest weapon
Competing across five competitions will place enormous demands on the Pirates squad.
Ouaddou will have to carefully manage his players throughout the season, particularly with domestic fixtures running alongside continental commitments.
That makes the club’s recruitment strategy — and its willingness to give opportunities to younger players — particularly important.
Pirates’ DDC side has also been crowned champions, providing further evidence of the depth of talent emerging through the club’s development system.
Young players could therefore play a crucial role in keeping the senior squad fresh during a congested campaign.
Ouaddou building a competitive squad
The Pirates coach now has a mixture of experienced campaigners, promising youngsters and new arrivals at his disposal.
That balance could prove vital as the Buccaneers attempt to compete on multiple fronts.
The club have already made a strong start, sitting at the top of the league and reaching the MTN8 semi-finals.
But maintaining that level over an entire season will be the real challenge.
The R100 million target
Winning the Betway Premiership, MTN8 and CAF Champions League would put Pirates in line for a massive prize-money haul, reportedly exceeding R100 million.
For the Buccaneers, though, the financial rewards would simply be an added benefit.
The ultimate objective remains silverware.
Can Orlando Pirates turn their strong squad into another trophy-filled season — and potentially a R100 million-plus payday?
