Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Thato Sibiya is reportedly on the verge of a move to France, with Ligue 1 side Lille preparing to bring the highly rated left-back to Europe on loan.
The 20-year-old defender is expected to travel to France this week after completing his medical examinations, with the proposed agreement understood to include an option for Lille to make the transfer permanent.
The move could represent an important next step in Sibiya’s development as he looks to establish himself in European football.
Sibiya set for Lille opportunity
Sundowns have reportedly given the green light for Sibiya to pursue the move, allowing the youngster to continue his development in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments.
The left-back has emerged through the South African development system, initially making his name at Panorama FC before joining the Mamelodi Sundowns academy.
At Chloorkop, Sibiya quickly attracted attention for his energy, work rate and ability to deliver quality balls from the left flank.
His performances in the DStv Diski Challenge helped put him on the radar at international level and eventually earned him opportunities with South Africa’s youth national teams.
From Amajita to the Sundowns first team
Sibiya became part of the South Africa U20 side, Amajita, and played an important role during the country’s successful 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
He later represented South Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, giving him further exposure on the international stage.
His progress eventually resulted in a promotion to the Sundowns senior squad in January 2026 under then-head coach Miguel Cardoso.
The youngster made four senior appearances across all competitions during the previous campaign.
He also travelled with the Sundowns squad to Morocco for the CAF Champions League final, gaining valuable experience alongside some of the continent’s most accomplished players.
Competition at Sundowns opens door to Europe
Despite his rapid progress, competition for the left-back position at Sundowns has made regular first-team opportunities difficult to secure at the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
A move to France could therefore provide Sibiya with an important platform to gain experience and continue developing his game.
Lille, one of France’s established Ligue 1 clubs, could offer the young South African an entirely new footballing environment and exposure to European-level competition.
For Sundowns, the loan could also prove beneficial if their academy product returns with greater experience or eventually secures a permanent European transfer.
Another South African prospect heading to Europe
If completed, Sibiya’s move would represent another significant milestone for a player who has progressed steadily through the South African football system.
From Panorama FC and the Sundowns academy to Amajita, the FIFA U20 World Cup and the Sundowns senior team, the defender’s journey has accelerated considerably.
Now, with Lille reportedly ready to open the door, Sibiya will have the opportunity to take the next step.
A move to Ligue 1 could be exactly what the young left-back needs to turn potential into a career at the highest level.
