
South African football is mourning the loss of Sipho “Fistoz” Nkumane, the former Bafana Bafana team manager, who passed away at the age of 56.
Nkumane died in hospital in Sebokeng on Sunday, 16 August 2026, leaving behind three children. His passing has been met with sadness across the South African football community.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, 20 August, with his funeral scheduled for Saturday, 22 August.
SAFA Pays Tribute
The South African Football Association (SAFA) expressed its condolences to Nkumane’s family, friends and colleagues.
SAFA president Danny Jordaan described his passing as a significant loss to his family, the association and South African football.
“Our sincere condolences to his family and we grieve his passing. May his soul rest in peace,” Jordaan said.
Nkumane played an important role in South African football through his involvement in various areas of the game, including his time as Bafana Bafana team manager.
His contribution to the national team and the wider football fraternity will be remembered as colleagues, supporters and members of the football community come to terms with his passing.

Beyond his official role, Nkumane was part of a generation of football figures who contributed to the growth and development of the game in South Africa.
