Kaizer Chiefs may have uncovered the biggest obstacle standing between them and a serious Betway Premiership title challenge: their defence.
The Amakhosi were held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay on Wednesday, a result that saw them drop to third in the league standings.
With Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns now two points clear at the top, Chiefs cannot afford to keep surrendering avoidable goals.
Chiefs’ title hopes remain alive
There is no need for panic just yet.
Chiefs remain unbeaten and are only two points behind the joint leaders. However, the warning signs are becoming harder to ignore after back-to-back league draws against Sundowns and Richards Bay.
Their attacking play has offered plenty of encouragement, while the midfield has shown that it can compete with the best teams in the division.
The biggest concern continues to be at the back.
Defence putting pressure on Amakhosi
The Richards Bay match provided another example.
Chiefs conceded inside the opening eight minutes after goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made a costly error while attempting to play out from the back. Nqaba Xulu capitalised on the mistake to give Richards Bay an early advantage.
It was another difficult moment for Petersen, who has already come under scrutiny following recent goalkeeping errors.
But simply changing the goalkeeper may not solve Chiefs’ defensive problems.
The team needs greater stability in front of whoever is between the posts. A consistent centre-back partnership, better defensive organisation and the return of a fully fit left-back could all help strengthen the Amakhosi at the back.
Chiefs have enough quality going forward
The positive for Fernando da Cruz is that his team continues to show attacking potential.
Chiefs have scored goals, created chances and demonstrated that they have enough quality in the final third to compete for the title.
The midfield has also provided a solid foundation.
But title-winning teams cannot continually give opponents cheap opportunities.
If Chiefs continue conceding avoidable goals, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns could gradually build a gap that becomes difficult to close.
The Amakhosi need a defensive reset
With their MTN8 campaign already over, the league has become a major priority before the CAF Confederation Cup adds another demanding competition to the schedule.
That makes defensive consistency even more important.
The message is simple: tighten up at the back, reduce individual errors and turn draws into wins.
The title race is still wide open, but Chiefs need to respond quickly if they want to remain in the hunt.
