Nota Baloyi has sparked another debate about status and influence in South African hip-hop after making pointed remarks about rapper and producer Zoocci Coke Dope during a recent appearance on Music Pulse.
Known for his outspoken views on the local music industry, Nota questioned whether Zoocci should be regarded among the country’s most established hip-hop figures, despite the producer’s strong following and recognised contribution to the newer generation of the genre.
“Like who the f*** is Zoocci, dog? … We don’t even consider when we think about ourselves up there at the top. We don’t even think that there’s a person who is called Zoocci that exists,” Nota said during the discussion.
His comments have reopened a familiar debate in SA hip-hop: Does popularity with a younger audience automatically translate into industry-wide status and legacy?
Zoocci’s Influence on the New Generation
While Nota questioned Zoocci’s standing, the producer and rapper has established a notable presence in contemporary South African hip-hop.
Zoocci Coke Dope has earned recognition for his production work and distinctive approach to SA trap and hip-hop, collaborating with artists including Nasty C, A-Reece and Blxckie.
His producer tag — “Zoocci Coke Dope! He’s the dealer” — has also become a recognisable part of the sound associated with his work.
His influence is particularly evident among younger hip-hop audiences, where his production style, collaborations and independent approach have helped him build a dedicated following.
That reputation, however, appears to be precisely where Nota draws the line between contemporary popularity and what he considers established industry stature.
Old Tensions Resurface
Nota’s latest comments also bring renewed attention to previous friction between the two creatives.
In 2021, Zoocci publicly criticised Nota following comments the music executive had made about South African rappers. Zoocci accused Nota of speaking on subjects he did not understand and cautioned him over his approach.
Nota subsequently responded with remarks of his own, adding another chapter to an already tense relationship.
The latest exchange therefore carries a history that goes beyond a simple disagreement over rankings or relevance.
Legacy vs. Current Influence
Regardless of Nota’s assessment, Zoocci’s career has included significant production credits, industry recognition and projects such as Anxiety and Anxiety+.
His body of work has earned support from artists and listeners, particularly within the newer wave of South African hip-hop.
Nota’s comments consequently raise a larger question about how SA hip-hop measures influence.
For some, legacy is determined by longevity, mainstream recognition and an established place among the genre’s pioneers. For others, influence can be measured by the artists an individual inspires, the sound they help create and their connection with a new generation of listeners.
Whether Zoocci belongs in the upper tier of SA hip-hop remains open to debate — but Nota’s comments have ensured that the conversation is once again firmly on the table.
