The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Rugby Team launched their 2026 Varsity Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, electrifying a capacity crowd at the UJ Rugby Stadium with a thrilling 61-41 victory over newcomers FNB Emeris on Monday night.
In a match defined by relentless attacking play and dramatic momentum shifts, the hosts showcased both clinical finishing and gritty second-half resilience to overcome a spirited challenge from the debutants.

A Tale of Two Halves
The first 40 minutes were a high-octane seesaw battle. UJ opened the scoring early through Ughan Afrika, with further tries from Reuven Ferreira, Captain Thabang Mphafi, and Nicallen Gabrielsen.
However, FNB Emeris proved they belonged in the “big league,” utilizing a brace from Nkazimulo Mzolo and a clinical finish by Jacques Marais to secure a narrow 21-19 lead at halftime.
Second-Half Surge and Forward Dominance
Emerging with renewed intensity, the UJ forward pack took command in the second half. Led by Co-captain Kamohelo Molefe, the “Orange Army” unleashed a flurry of tries, with Ryan Marimo, Themba Sibisi, and a brace from Josh du Toit blowing the game wide open.
Nick Allen’s precision off the tee ensured the scoreboard kept ticking, sealing a decisive win for the hosts.
