Orlando Pirates have been handed a worrying injury concern despite cruising to a 4-0 victory over Kruger United, with in-form new signing Gamphani Lungu forced off after opening the scoring.
The Buccaneers produced another impressive performance at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night to extend their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership to three points.
But the comfortable victory was overshadowed by Lungu’s injury.
LUNGU FORCED OFF AFTER OPENING THE SCORING
Lungu made the perfect start by putting Pirates ahead, continuing his impressive beginning to life at the club.
However, the 25-year-old was unable to finish the match after picking up an injury shortly after scoring.
Lungu was stretchered off the pitch, with Oswin Appollis introduced as his replacement.
The full extent of the injury remains unknown, with the Pirates medical team expected to assess the attacker before providing an official update.
There has been speculation that Lungu may have suffered a hamstring problem, but that has not been officially confirmed.
PIRATES CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE LUNGU
The timing of the injury will concern head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Lungu has quickly established himself as one of Pirates’ most influential players since arriving at the club, scoring five goals and making a strong impression during the early stages of the season.
His versatility has also made him a valuable option for Ouaddou, who has used the attacker in different positions.
That means an extended absence could leave a significant hole in the Pirates squad.
If the injury ultimately results in a six-to-12-week layoff, Lungu could miss the highly anticipated MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns next month.
WILL LUNGU’S INJURY SLOW PIRATES’ MOMENTUM?
Pirates have built considerable momentum and currently sit three points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership.
They will now turn their attention to their CAF Champions League campaign, but Lungu’s fitness will remain a major talking point.
For now, the Buccaneers will hope the injury is less serious than initially feared.
The club’s medical assessment should provide a clearer picture of how long Lungu could be unavailable — and whether he can return in time for one of the biggest fixtures on Pirates’ calendar.
Will Gamphani Lungu’s injury derail Orlando Pirates’ momentum, or can the Buccaneers maintain their impressive run without him?
