Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign may be over, but a reported dispute over player bonuses could create another headache for South African football chiefs.
Almost two months after the tournament, Bafana Bafana players and members of the technical team are reportedly still waiting for World Cup-related bonuses from the South African Football Association (SAFA).
According to a report by Sunday World, the alleged delay has caused frustration within the national team, with some players reportedly considering industrial action ahead of their next camp.
The reported dispute comes at an awkward time for newly appointed Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, who is preparing the national team for the next phase of its international programme.
Bafana players reportedly unhappy over unpaid bonuses
The alleged bonus dispute centres on payments that players were reportedly promised for their performances at the 2026 World Cup.
An unnamed team member told Sunday World that players had yet to receive the money and claimed SAFA had already received its FIFA allocation.
The source also alleged that the association had promised to make the payments but that the players and technical staff were still waiting.
These claims have not been independently confirmed, and SAFA’s position on the reported delay remains important before drawing conclusions about the dispute.
How did the R65 million figure come about?
The reported amount is significant.
According to the claims cited in the report, South Africa’s 26 World Cup players were initially promised approximately R2 million each for the group-stage campaign.
After Bafana progressed beyond the group stage, the reported individual bonus increased to around R2.5 million per player.
If that figure applied to all 26 players, the total would come to approximately R65 million.
That figure relates specifically to the reported player bonuses and does not represent the entire amount of money SAFA received from FIFA.
SAFA reportedly received substantial World Cup funding
South Africa’s World Cup progress also resulted in significant FIFA-related funding.
The report claims SAFA received approximately $12 million, valued at around R218 million, while a separate preparation payment of approximately $2.5 million was reportedly worth about R41 million.
That would put the reported FIFA-related funding at approximately R259 million.
However, the entire amount was not simply a player bonus fund. FIFA payments can cover various tournament-related costs, while portions may also be directed towards preparation, football development, administration and other expenses.
The reported R65 million player figure therefore represents only one part of the wider financial picture.
Technical team also reportedly waiting
The alleged dispute reportedly extends beyond the players.
According to the anonymous source quoted by Sunday World, members of the technical team, including former coach Hugo Broos, were also allegedly still waiting for their respective payments.
That claim adds another dimension to the issue, particularly given that the national team has since entered a new coaching era under Mosimane.
The reported situation could therefore become an issue for the new coach even though the alleged payments relate to the previous World Cup campaign.
Could the bonus dispute affect the next Bafana camp?
The timing is perhaps the biggest concern.
Bafana are preparing for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with fixtures against Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt reportedly on the horizon.
If the claims about a potential player go-slow prove accurate, the issue could create an unwanted distraction before the national team resumes competitive action.
The South African Football Players Union has reportedly begun looking into the matter and is expected to provide more information after investigating the claims.
