Rassie Erasmus signals a massive changing of the guard, omitting Faf de Klerk, Willie le Roux, Makazole Mapimpi, Vincent Koch, and Lukhanyo Am from the latest Springbok squad.

While the inclusion of six explosive, uncapped prodigies in Rassie Erasmus’s latest 46-man Springbok squad has ignited immense excitement, it simultaneously signals a brutal reality check for some of South African rugby’s greatest icons.

The experimental phase is firmly over. With his sights set entirely on future horizons and blooding the next generation, Erasmus has made a definitive statement. For a handful of double World Cup-winning legends, the door to the green and gold is closing rapidly—and for some, it has likely slammed shut for good.

Here is a closer look at the five iconic veterans omitted from the July Test window.

The Excluded Icons: End of the Road?

1. Faf de Klerk (Scrumhalf, 34)

The combative, giant-killing general finds himself on the outside looking in. De Klerk has slipped down a fiercely competitive scrumhalf pecking order dominated by a resurgent Embrose Papier, Grant Williams, Cobus Reinach, and a recalled Herschel Jantjies. His immediate transition to the Barbarians squad alongside Vincent Koch confirms he still possesses world-class talent, but his era as the Springboks’ primary tactical spark is drawing to a close.

2. Makazole Mapimpi (Wing, 35)

Father Time has finally caught up with one of the most clinical finishers in international rugby history. With Mzansi boasting an embarrassing wealth of outside back talent—including Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, Edwill van der Merwe, and electric rookie Jaco Williams—Mapimpi is transitioning into an emergency backup role. His legendary Test career appears to have reached its final chapter.

3. Vincent Koch (Prop, 36)

Despite joining the initial extended training block, “Mr. Incredible” did not make the 46-man cut. Koch hasn’t earned a Test cap since the Georgia clash a year ago, and Erasmus is actively phasing him out to groom future front-row anchors like Bordeaux’s Carlü Sadie alongside Wilco Louw and Thomas du Toit. He remains a respected elder statesman, but his time in the primary Bomb Squad rotation is over.

4. Willie le Roux (Fullback, 36)

The quiet omission of the veteran playmaker is perhaps the clearest sign of the changing of the guard. Despite ongoing debates regarding absolute fullback depth, leaving Le Roux out signals a definitive, long-term commitment to Damian Willemse, Aphelele Fassi, and the playmaking conversion of Lions starlet Quan Horn. Le Roux reached his milestone 100th Test cap last year, but it is unlikely he will add to that tally.

5. Lukhanyo Am (Centre, 32)

Once universally regarded as the absolute finest outside centre on the planet, Am’s trajectory has been severely derailed by a string of troublesome injuries and subsequent form dips. Having not featured in a Test match since November 2024, the 32-year-old isn’t completely locked out, but the exceptional form of Jesse Kriel and the utility value of Canan Moodie makes his road back to the starting lineup an uphill battle.
