Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City after taking the lead through Maboe. Here's what went wrong for the Amakhosi in the second half.

Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City, with the Amakhosi left frustrated after failing to protect their lead and producing a disappointing second-half performance.

Chiefs opened the scoring through Maboe, with Mmodi providing the assist, giving the visitors a platform to push for all three points.

However, the performance was far from convincing.

Chiefs Struggle to Find Their Rhythm

The opening stages were particularly difficult for Kaizer Chiefs. The Amakhosi were sloppy in possession during the first 20 minutes and struggled to deal with Polokwane City’s transitions.

That allowed the home side to grow in confidence and create opportunities as the match progressed.

Chiefs improved towards the end of the first half, but the real problems emerged after the break.

A Second Half to Forget

Kaizer Chiefs failed to reproduce the intensity and attacking threat required in the second half.

Instead of taking control of the match, the Amakhosi appeared increasingly focused on protecting their narrow advantage. Polokwane City looked the more energetic and purposeful side for long periods, despite Chiefs having the lead.

The substitutions also appeared to disrupt Chiefs’ structure and momentum, with the team struggling to maintain an attacking threat.

Ultimately, Polokwane found a way back into the game and secured a share of the points.

Petersen Under Pressure

Another major talking point will be the performance of Brandon Petersen.

The goalkeeper has come under increasing scrutiny following a number of costly errors this season. With Fiacre Ntwari/Leaner providing an alternative option, pressure is likely to grow for coach Fernando da Cruz to reconsider his goalkeeping selection.

If Petersen retains his place for the upcoming fixture against Golden Arrows on 20 September, the decision is likely to attract further discussion among Chiefs supporters.

Two Points Dropped?

From a results perspective, a point away from home is not necessarily a disaster.

But considering Chiefs had taken the lead, the manner in which the advantage disappeared will leave supporters disappointed.

Polokwane City showed greater intensity and control for significant periods, while Chiefs struggled to create enough attacking opportunities after halftime.

For Da Cruz, the performance raises important questions about game management, tactical adjustments and the team’s ability to control matches after taking the lead.

A point gained on paper — but given the position Chiefs were in, it will feel much more like two points dropped.
